How to dress

From MalaysiaExpat

While Malaysia is a majority-Muslim country, dress standards are not nearly as restrictive as in some areas of the Middle East. In fact, in Kuala Lumpur, it's downright libertine. Miniskirts and skin-tight clothes are common sights on women, and in almost any residential neighborhood you can find men wandering around in nothing but a pair of old boxer shorts.

In the northern states of Kedah and Kelantan, people tend to be more conservative, and women are advised to cover their legs and shoulders except on the beach. Men may also want to avoid shorts.

Anyone who wants to visit a mosque will have to cover their legs and shoulders, and women must also cover their hair. Some mosques that receive a lot of tourists provide temporary clothing for this purpose.
