Landline telephones

The only option for landline telephone service is Telekom Malaysia, the government monopoly. Foreigners will need to put down a deposit of RM1075 before they can have a line installed. Installation normally takes one to two weeks.

Because the cost of placing calls from landlines in Malaysia is not particularly cheap - especially when calling mobile phones, long distance, or internationally - they have become increasingly unpopular in recent years. For many people, the only reason to get one is because it's required for Streamyx ADSL broadband internet service.

One other reason to get a landline is that calling Malaysian landlines from outside the country is substantially cheaper than calling Malaysian mobile phones. In fact, these days, calls to Malaysian landlines are completely free from discount providers in some countries (such as the USA). So, if you expect (or want) to receive a lot of calls from friends and family abroad, a landline may make things easier.

Landline telephone installations in Malaysia use the standard RJ-11 (US-style) plug.
