Streamyx ADSL
From MalaysiaExpat
Telekom's Streamyx service is by far the most common broadband option in Malaysia. Quality ranges from abysmal to quite decent depending on various factors (e.g., location, physical phone line condition, time of day). It is available in most cities.
As of this writing, the following packages are available for residential users:
- 1024/384, unlimited usage - RM88/month if you supply a modem, RM99 if you rent one from them. Note that this package is widely discounted to RM77/month if you sign up through the orange-shirted people in stands you'll find in any mall with a computer section (e.g., Low Yat Plaza). As of late 2006 many customers have found themselves upgraded to 1536/512 speed without any changes to their bill.
- 512/256, unlimited usage - RM66/month if you supply a modem, RM77 if you rent one from them.
- 512/256, 40 hours per month - RM44/month, then RM0.60/hr for time used beyond the first 40 hours.
- 384/128, 20 hours per month - RM20/month, then RM3.00/hr for time used beyond the first 20 hours.
Any DSL modem you buy in Malaysia will work with Streamyx - but confirm with the vendor to be sure.
The modems provided to customers who choose to rent from Telekom, tend to be horrid. They are from strange unknown manufacturers (they switch brands every few months), and many people find them highly unreliable.
