Taxis

Taxis in Kuala Lumpur are metered and the driver is required to use the meter for trips within the city. Rates are very reasonable; the meter rate from KLCC to KL Sentral is about RM8 (US$2).

However, in some circumstances you may find it difficult to convince drivers to use the meter. Certain locations are notorious for this; KLCC is probably the worst, followed by Chinatown. Drivers here and at a few other spots will invariable insist on RM10 or RM15 minumum for trips within town. The more lost, foreign, and confused you look, the higher the quote will be. Unfortunately, at these areas you may not have much choice unless you are willing to put up an argument or try a large number of taxis looking for the one with an honest driver.

Outside of these major tourist spots, it should not be difficult to convince a driver to use the meter. Taxis are sufficiently plentiful that you will not lose much time by sending an uncooperative driver on his way and waiting for the next one. In residential areas the taxi drivers are almost all honest in the first instance; no negotiation is normally required.

From midnight-6am, a 50% night charge applies. This is not reflected on the meter, so you and/or the taxi driver will have to work out the exact amount.

A taxi ride to the airport from central KL should not cost more than RM60.
